The EPUB format is the open standard for ebooks. Unlike PDFs, which preserve a fixed visual layout, EPUB files contain reflowable text that adapts to screen size — making them ideal for phones and tablets of any dimension. Dedicated e-ink readers have supported EPUB for years. The remaining gap is audio: most ebook apps display text well but offer no way to have the book read aloud.

The workaround most readers use is switching between an ebook app for reading and an audiobook app for listening — which means buying books twice if a commercial audiobook exists, or going without if it does not. For academic titles, self-published books, open-access research, and public domain literature, commercial audiobooks often do not exist at all. For contemporary titles, several stores offer DRM-free purchases. Kobo sells a large DRM-free catalogue alongside its DRM titles — look for the "DRM-free" label on individual book pages. Fahasa Ebook and Waka are good sources for Vietnamese-language ebooks. Some independent publishers and authors sell direct-to-reader EPUB files through their own websites or platforms like Gumroad and Payhip.

Library lending through OverDrive and Libby provides EPUB access without purchase — check out titles from your public library card and the file is available for the loan period. Most library EPUBs use Adobe DRM, which means you would need a DRM-free copy to import into TapListen; however, some libraries do lend open EPUBs depending on the title and publisher arrangement.

Calibre is the most widely used open-source ebook management tool. Readers use it to organize large libraries, convert between formats, edit metadata, and transfer books to reading devices. If you manage your ebook collection with Calibre, your library is almost certainly composed of DRM-free EPUB files that TapListen can read.

The connection between Calibre and TapListen works through cloud storage. Export a Calibre library folder — or individual books — to iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Dropbox. On your phone or tablet, open TapListen, navigate to that cloud folder, and import the EPUB files you want to listen to. There is no direct Calibre integration because Calibre runs on desktop and TapListen runs on mobile, but cloud storage bridges the gap with minimal friction.

For readers who regularly add new books, the process becomes routine: export the new title from Calibre to a designated sync folder in cloud storage, open TapListen, import. The imported book is stored locally on your device and available offline from that point forward. You do not need to keep the cloud folder or the Calibre export in place once the import is complete.

Side-loading also works for EPUBs acquired from sources other than commercial stores: Project Gutenberg offers tens of thousands of public domain books as free DRM-free EPUBs. Open-access publishers provide academic and scientific titles in EPUB format. Self-published authors frequently offer DRM-free EPUB as a direct-to-reader purchase option. One practical note: not all EPUB files are well-formed. Some older EPUBs from early digital publishers have formatting issues — missing chapter markers, inconsistent encoding, or image-heavy layouts with minimal text. For files that import incorrectly, converting through Calibre before importing often resolves the problem since Calibre's conversion pipeline normalizes common formatting irregularities.

A good ebook-to-audio experience requires more than playing text in order. Books have structure — chapters, parts, prefaces, appendices, footnotes — and a listening app needs to handle that structure gracefully rather than treating the entire book as a single undifferentiated stream of text.

TapListen reads the EPUB navigation structure and builds chapter-level controls from it. The chapter list is accessible at any time, showing each chapter title and your current progress through it. You can jump forward to the next chapter, go back to the previous one, or navigate directly to any chapter in the table of contents. Chapter navigation uses the EPUB's built-in table of contents when present, giving accurate next/prev buttons and a chapter list matching the book's own structure. For books without a table of contents, TapListen falls back to content-based chapter detection.

Footnotes require a different approach. In print, footnotes appear at the bottom of the page and a reader can glance down mid-paragraph. In audio, inserting a footnote at the exact moment it is referenced interrupts the sentence flow. TapListen handles footnotes by reading the main body continuously and announcing footnote content at the end of the paragraph in which the reference appeared. A brief audio cue marks the transition so you always know when you are hearing a footnote versus body text.

Progress tracking works at the book level and the chapter level simultaneously. The main library view shows each imported book with a percentage-complete indicator. Inside the book, a chapter progress bar shows how far through the current chapter you are. Listening position is saved automatically every few seconds, so closing the app mid-sentence does not cause you to lose your place. Cloud sync carries this position across devices. If you read on your phone during the day and prefer a tablet at home, opening the book on either device shows the same progress indicator and resumes from the same sentence.
